Rotation

The term Rotation is used to describe any moment in which the shoulders and hips of the dancer are not aligned with one another.

Normally, this variation takes place through the rotation of the shoulders in relation to the hips, but can also be due to the rotation of the hips and feet in relation to the shoulders (in case of figure without Quantity of Turn the rotation are made only by the hips).

There are also some cases where both of these actions are combined (e.g. Whisk).

Anatomically, the Rotation occurs around a sagittal axis passing through the articulation of reference, and generates a Torsion within the body of the dancer.

This Torsion is created by the anterior and posterior muscle chains which cross the body diagonally.

In figure 8.a below, the imaginary line of the shoulders is plotted in relation to that of the hips, and in figure 8.b the hips are plotted in relation to the shoulders:

There are three fundamental uses for Rotation:
Rotation

The following guidelines may be used to understand when each type of Rotation usually occurs during a step:

Lightness (CBM - Contrary Body Movement) : Normally distributed over the entire step
少しのRotation(CBM):通常そのステップ全体で行う

Leading to change position of the centre: Normally after the Centre Balance Position

Leading to outside partner: Normally before the actual step (over the foot of the previous step)

Dynamics: Normally over the foot at the end of a Drive Action

Lightness (CBM - Contrary Body Movement):
少しのRotation(CBM)

At the beginning of any rightward or leftward turning figure, both partners execute a slight Rotation of the upper part of the body (shoulders) in relation to the lower part (hips and feet), generating a significant effect of lightness in the movement.

Leading:
Rotation

In this case, Rotation is considered one of the Man's principal tools for communicating to the lady the transition from one Position of Centre to another or to allow the "Outside Partner Position".

Dynamics:
Rotation

The function of this Rotation is that of giving a greater effect of movement and volume and does not directly influence the correct bio-mechanical execution of the figure itself.

It is normally used in lines, but can also be introduced in some basic figures in order to make the movement appear more attractive and faster.

It should also be noted that Rotation for Dynamics usually follows a Rotation for Lightness, in which case the former should be considered a continuation of the latter

In general, Rotation improves the stability, the coordination and the appearance of the couple.

In the Rotation column of each chart, the direction of the Rotation will be indicated (To R/To L) together with the body part executing the action (shoulders/hips) and, in brackets, the purpose of the Rotation (Lightness/Dynamics/Leading abbreviated as Light./Dyn./Lead. respectively).
