Heel Turn

The Heel Turn is a static turn to the right or to the left where:

the turn is made over the Heel of the foot making the first step;

the foot making the second step is closed without weight to the foot which made the first step and the weight is transferred only after the turn has been completed.

Normally the Timing used in the Heel Turn has to be divided in 3/4 for the closing and 1/4 for the opening.

This Timing is managed by maintaining a small pressure with the Moving foot towards the floor.

After reaching the Centre Balance Position the back Heel is lowered and the new Moving Leg moves towards the new Standing Leg (even if only Recover Body is indicated in the charts).

At the same time, the knee of the new Standing Leg will bend.

Because of the dynamics produced in modern dancing, the first step cannot be positioned directly backward or forward but slightly to the side (backward/forward).

The second step, for the partner moving forward, will start forward and finish to the side.

The Rise and Fall of a Heel Turn is as follows (see example below: Reverse Turn in Slow Fox):

STEP MAN LADY
1 Lower on 1 (Leg) then start to rise e/o 1(Leg) Lower on 1 (Leg) then start to rise e/o 1 (Leg-Body)
2 Cont. to rise on 2 (Foot-Leg-Body) Cont. to rise on 2 (Leg-Foot-Body)
3 Up on 3 (Foot-Leg-Body)
Lower e/o 3 (Foot)
Up on 3 (Foot-Leg-Body)
Lower e/o 3 (Foot)

In order to lead the Heel Turn, the Rotation for Dynamic must be made with the shoulders on the Centre of Balance Position (in this case Rotation for Dynamic is happening half step before then usual);
ヒールターンへリードするために、the Rotation for Dynamic はセンターバランスポジションの位置で両肩を使って実行しなければならない(この場合、the Rotation for Dynamicは通常よりも前、ステップの中間で起こる);

this Rotation will be recovered by the hips in the second half of the step, the combination between this Rotation and the Gradual Rise described above allows the partner dancing the Heel Turn to finish with the body weight directly over the Heel on the first step.

Even though the Heel Turn is a static turn, sway may be danced in this action (see example below: Reverse Turn in Slow Fox)

STEP MAN LADY
1 Straight Straight
2 To L (Technical) To R (Technical)
3 To L (Cosmetic) then Straight To R (Cosmetic) then Straight

Heel Pull

The Heel Pull is a particular type of Heel Turn.

This action is used in order to decelerate the body, making it possible to change the direction of the movement. 3/8 of a turn is made between the first and the second step for both (Man and Lady).
