Cutting in

A woman who is dancing may not refuse to change partners when another cuts in. This is the worst phase of the cutting-in custom; those who particularly want to dance together are often unable to take a dozen steps before being interrupted. Possibly the current custom of dancing only one's date the entire evening is a reaction against old idea that to be popular a woman must be constantly cut in on.

When a man sees a woman with whom he wants to dance, he steps forward and taps the shoulder of her partner, who relinquishes his place in favor of the newcomer. The couple then dances until a third man cuts in or the music stops. The partner who was first dancing with the woman should not cut back on the man who took her from him, nor should a man continue to cut in on the same man when the latter dances with other partners.
